Healing Through Grief Coaching After Divorce

Should I consider grief coaching following a divorce or post-menopause? Is loss of self-identity worth grieving?

Grief coaching after divorce or menopause can be profoundly healing, especially when you’re mourning the loss of self-identity. These transitions often involve deep emotional shifts, and grief coaching helps you process them, reclaim your sense of self, and help you move forward with clarity and strength.

Divorce can trigger deep emotional turmoil, including feelings of abandonment, betrayal, or failure, even when mutually agreed upon, as it marks the end of a shared future. Beyond the relationship itself, many grieve the loss of roles like spouse or co-parent, which often shape personal identity. Because society frequently downplays the emotional impact of divorce, grief coaching offers vital support by validating these experiences and guiding individuals through the complex process of healing.

My first marriage ended suddenly. It was short-lived, and in hindsight, a bad decision from the beginning, because it was a ‘carpe diem‘ moment, following my brother’s death at the age of 25. My husband wanted to ‘make me happy’, and we decided not to waste any time in getting married. It was hasty, and he had his doubts, he later admitted. So when I discovered he was having an affair early on in the marriage, I was devastated. Apparently I wasn’t ‘fun’ enough. Given that I was grieving my brother and dealing with PTSD and panic attacks from being present as he died, I thought that rather unfair. As well we as being betrayed, he had failed to support me through that loss and I was left feeling that I simply wasn’t good, or fun, or attractive enough.

Grief isn’t just about death: It’s about any significant loss—including identity, purpose, or dreams.

Living losses are real: These are losses that don’t involve death but still deeply affect your emotional world. Examples include divorce, menopause, retirement, or chronic illness.

Grief coaching honors these losses: It provides space to mourn, reflect, and rebuild. You’re not “being dramatic” – you’re being human.

Unlike therapy, which often explores the past, grief coaching is future-focused and action-oriented. It equips clients with tools to navigate the emotional fallout of divorce—such as sadness, anger, guilt, or confusion—while also helping them rediscover purpose and self-worth.

Grief coaching offers a safe, supportive space to explore emotions, build resilience, and develop tools for emotional regulation and self-compassion. With guidance from someone who understands the complexity of life transitions, it helps you rediscover meaning, purpose, and joy.

What techniques are used when coaching post-divorce?

1. Identity Reintegration

  • Coaches guide clients through exercises that explore who they were, who they are now, and who they want to become. This helps rebuild a sense of self beyond the former relationship.

2. Emotional Processing Tools

  • Techniques like journaling prompts, guided visualisation, and somatic awareness help clients name and release complex emotions such as grief, resentment, or shame.

3. Boundary and Communication Coaching

  • Clients learn how to set healthy boundaries with ex-partners, co-parents, or mutual friends, and how to communicate assertively without guilt or fear.

4. Values and Vision Work

  • Coaches help clients reconnect with their core values and create a vision for the next chapter of life—whether that includes new relationships, career shifts, or personal growth.

5. Rituals for Closure

  • Symbolic acts like writing a goodbye letter (not sent), creating a “letting go” ceremony, or reframing wedding vows into personal affirmations can offer emotional release and closure.
